I am in the process of reserving a room at Tegal Sari, and the hotel has sent me an authorization letter to fax them. I%26#39;m a bit reluctant to send my credit card information by FAX. Is it standard practice to send the hotel your credit card information to reserve your room there?

For this hotel if you%26#39;re paying by credit card and booking directly with them, it%26#39;s common practice. In my opinion it%26#39;s not good practice however, but I%26#39;ve booked with them in this manner, but using email rather than fax. I must say I had no problems, but you%26#39;re right to be wary; it only takes one dishonest member of staff to steal your details. Booking directly with them your only other option is to do an International Monetary Transfer, which you%26#39;ll be charged a hefty amount for.
Your other option is to use a reputable hotel booking website.

Yes it is . We booked back in June for our holiday in Jan and I emailed the number rather than fax it. Had no problems. They kkep the number incase there is a no show and need to charge for a night. Credit card is good because if ever there is an issue the bank refunds you (had a case of skimming once in Singapore)
We have just returned from a stay at Tegal Sari- and yes we did book via the internet using a credit card.
I too was a bit reluctant to send sensitive info like this via the an unsafe internet site, however, it was ok. I couldn%26#39;t find any other way of booking a room with them. ( I%26#39;m based in the UK) Incidentally, I%26#39;m sure you wont be dissappointed, its an abosolute gem of of hotel. stayed 6 nights We had 2 different rooms, as we were late in booking,( only 4 weeks before) and were lucky to get in- The best rooms ( in our opinion) are the new ones - Super delux wooden rooms- 3 cottages with 6 rooms- no. 19,21,23 ( on ground floor) and our favourites- 20,22,24 (on floor top floor ) - Go for it.
Folks, a fax is far safer than e-mailing a credit card number. Your e-mail message goes through numerous servers in multiple countries you have no control over and is stored there for years, long after both you and the hotel employee have deleted it.
Never e-mail a credit card unless it%26#39;s posted on a secure form like an e-commerce site.
I made the mistake of faxing a confirmation to a hotel in Lombok and got a US$40 phone bill. This included a few hangups I got the phone company to refund. For the second hotel, I bought a phone card and called with the details.
We fax our details when booking hotels in Bali. Have not had a problem.
i have e mailed my credit card numerous times for hotel bookings. i suggest you send your number in different e mails for extra security. ie first e mail first 3 numbers, 2nd e mail next 3 numbers etc.
If you are worried about unscrupulous SysAdmins and their prying eyes, you can always encrypt your emails. Micro$oft Outlook has some reasonable encryption, but if you are serious about it, look at PGP (Pretty Good Privacy).
You are right Snookytraveltips- thats what we did, split the numbers up in several emails, and never devulge the 3 digit number on the back of the card
Thanks for all the good advice. I ended up sending my information in pieces by FAX and e-mail, which was ok with the hotel.
Have booked at Tegal Sari many times and always sent credit card details via email but on their suggestion split up the info on two different emails. Never had a problem. Fabulous place to stay and very, very efficient and friendly staff. Staying again in August (twice). Enjoy it.
