To Bandung from Jakarta by Taxi

Im planning to go to bandung from jakarta by taxi. I%26#39;ve read that Golden Bird taxi service would be best. Anyone knows how much it would cost? To and fro..And how do i go about making an advance booking if need be?

To Bandung from Jakarta by Taxi

I do not know the exact amount, but getting from the airport to the city costs no less than Rp 100,000.-, so one may estimate that driving by taxi to Bandung would cost something like Rp 400,000.-;

Why not take the train from Gambir station to Bandung, costs only Rp 40,000.- ?

To Bandung from Jakarta by Taxi

Gambir Station? Is that far from the airport? How long does it take to bandung by train?

Gambir Station is in the centre of Jakarta, just east of Merdeka Square. Depending on the traffic takes about an hour from the airport.

The train takes 3 hours to get to Bandung. There are at least 10 trains daily. The trains called Argo Gede (Rp 50,000) are the fastest, their AC may be too cold. The trains called Parahyangan (Rp 25,000 - 40,000) are a little bit slower.

Advance booking is only possible at the station counter. But usually - if it is not holiday season - you can get a ticket half an hour before the train leaves.

See the train schedule at: infoka.kereta-api.com/index.php鈥?/a> [Enter your Origin and Destination, Gambir and Bandung respectively].

Hi,

You can also go by bus to Bandung from Jakarta Airport. I did this trip at 7pm in early May 2008.

I spoke with a yuong porter at the airport who was able to help me to buy new credit for my mobile phone and also to buy a bus ticket. Luckily for me the bus left 10 minutes later and took 3 hrs to get to Bandung.

The drop off point is at a huge shopping mall- cannot remember where.

I think the bus company%26#39;s name started with C.

I am sure someone else will be bale to fill in the details I have missed.

Pamela

The wisest way would be by shuttle service between Jakarta airport directly to Bandung. These are operated by either Cipaganti or X-trans. The fare is Rp90.000 per person one way to Bandung.

You can go to the website for schedule, fare, and telephone number. They have counters at airport, so just reach the counter and buy the ticket, no advance booking is necessary, however you can do so if you want to.

The fleet are comfy 8-seater or 10-seater van or mini bus (like KIA pregio).

www.cipaganti.co.id or www.xtrans.co.id

Golden Bird is the brand of limousine and car rental service from reputable taxi company; Blue Bird Group. You can book by contacting them by email, phone, or website www.blueburdgroup.com Depending on what vehicle you wish to rent, the cheapest one can go from Rp525.000/3 hours with additional Rp70.000/hour.

P.S. never buy anything from the airport porter or anybody at the airport (everyone in the airport seems to have double job as a retailer as well!). They are nice and target people who look confuse or need help. They will help you but will also trick you to buy something from them, the price is not the recommended retail price you would get at other place...

there is a lot of transportation from jakarta beside taxi you can take the shuttle bus service from jakarta airport to bandung jsut ask the information or tourist information in the airport.

or you can take the cipaganti shuttle bus service jakarta to bandung

Hey all, thank you so much for your help!!You guys are awesome and probably just saved me a couple of hundred bucks.. Just One small problem, the shuttle bus sites are all in bahasa indonesia!!lol....Happy New Year ALL!!!

I know... In case you%26#39;re having trouble in translating the bahasa, you can always ask in the forum. (Since you%26#39;re from Singapore, give you the website directly since it%26#39;s not differ much than Bahasa Malaysia, but if you%26#39;re ang-moh, then pardon me, I can translate it for you...)

unfortunately, the website is not in english. so don%26#39;t know what it%26#39;s saying. :(

Bali Resturants!!

Me and my family (husband, son 5 months) are going to Bali in June and was wondering if any one has any ideas of places to eat. we are staying in Legian.

Thanks

Bali Resturants!!

Catalyst did an excellent list a couple of months ago, see the link below:

tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g294226-i7220-k2…

It%26#39;s one of the few postings that grace my Favourites folder.

Bali Resturants!!

if you staying in legian I suggest you to eat in the local food restaurant and it%26#39;s more cheapest they have a delicious food and you will be a true feel of bali.....

Legian is quite a sprawling place.

You can eat at many restaurants in the main streets or some excellent choices also down on the beach strip. The list is endless , my advice is to walk out of your hotel and go into any you like the look of. Try a different 1 or 2 every day. :) My favourites are on the beach such as Seaside Cafe, Blue Ocean, Lannai, Goodies, Warung Asia.

In the streets I like Ketumba, Posers and cheapies like Legian Snacks , Warung Yogya.

  • Travel insurance

has anyone used www.travel4less.com.au ? Their rates seem to be very cheap, Im just wondering if anyone has used them and had any complaints.

    Travel insurance

    hey Princess,

I have not used that site before. However i know of a site that is probably the cheapest rates you will EVER get travel insurance.

My family have used this insurance to travel from AUS to NZ and we are also using them for trvel from AUS to FIJI in september. I would advise you to check this site out....also anyone else who is looking for insurance. You will be pleasantly surprised!

Just a secret i have recently come across that is now not a secret!

    Travel insurance

As far as I can ascertain, the company is run by Last Minute.com.

A word of advise, CHEAPEST is not the best way to arrange insurance. Read the policies carefully, some offer things you don%26#39;t need but don%26#39;t cover what%26#39;s essential for your particular holiday.

I have used Travelinsurance direct and 1 cover and had no problems with claims. Read a few, get online quotes then decide.

I use travelinsurancedirect.com , fairly cheap, have never had a problem , then again , i have never had a claim , but i have herd they are great if you do need to claim .

    cheers

    Hi princessturbo

I am asking this as a %26#39;general%26#39; question and offer some info re Travel Insurance.(I realize you may already be aware of all this, but it may/may not be of interest to others, and I apologize if it%26#39;s a bit of a %26#39;woffle%26#39;)

I am interested as to %26#39;how cheap%26#39; the insurance is and what it offers you. Can you contact them 24/7 in the case of an Emergency. Will they cover you if you ride a bike in Bali(must have international bike licence) or if you are a passenger on the back of a bike and are involved in an accident.(offered a lift by a Balinese friend, i%26#39;ve never thought about it before)Travel Insurance will not pay the claim if you or a member of your Travelling Party is under the influence of, intoxicating liquor.(These were a couple of questions i asked, when shopping for quotes).(How many of us %26#39;really%26#39; understand the Travel Insurance booklet and know what we are covered for and what we are not.I%26#39;ve never had a Travel Agent go through it with me,(it%26#39;s usually: You need Plan X and it will cost you xx$$%26#39;s.) It%26#39;s up to us to read it and %26#39;understand%26#39; it and and if we don%26#39;t then we %26#39;should%26#39; ask lots of questions, to be sure, to be sure.(I would never travel O/S without Travel Insurance and up until now touch %26#39;wood%26#39; i%26#39;ve never needed to claim).

A well known Travel Agent here in Adelaide, recommends QBE and Covermore as two of the best.

    Cheers

    Burns

Just to add to the above, can%26#39;t stress enough to make sure motorcyle cover is included in your policy if you%26#39;re planning to ride a motorbike over there.

If you are an Australian, you need to hold a motorbike licence in Australia and an international licence endorsed for motorcyles, to ride in Indonesia.

If you are going to ride as a pillion passenger, make sure the bike rider has a licence.

Some travel insurance policies require an extra premium to be paid as well, to cover you for motorcyle riding.

whatever insurance you take read the fine print.

i%26#39;ve had no claims on some trips and claims on others. some of these were settled quickly and others dragged on for months.

as was advised,l cheaper can mean that you are covered for less.

Hi there guys thanks for your tips, I decided to go with www.insure4less.com.au............they do cover bike accidents, and I was happy with their other payouts. Their insurance is backed by Lloyds of London, I cant see them ever going broke. Cost was $167 for a family for 5 weeks. I was just wondering if anyone else had experience with them.

Travel Insurance will not pay the claim if you or a member of your Travelling Party is under the influence of Intoxicating Liquor.(not just when riding a bike)

An Adelaide man suffered brain damage in a fall while holidaying in Switzerland Dec 2007 after falling down an icy embankment. The fall is looming as a financial disaster for the young man, who is not covered for medical expenses because he drank alcohol beforehand.

    Burns

    Hey everyone

Most travel insurance companies will say as a requirement to be covered for motorcycle cover you need to hold an Australian motorcycle licence. However i know that Covermore do not necessarily require a Austalian motorcycle licence. You just need to hold the correct licence in the country you are visiting. So i guess, if you are gong to Bali and are hiring a motorcycle you need to check whether the regulations say that they accept Austalian licences (whether motorcycle or drivers licence) or you need to obtain a local licence.

Also, many companies say that you need to be hiring from an actual hire company not just some random person on the street.

The other things you really need to consider when checking out travel insurance is if they cover for terrorism. Most companies dont cover for this, only the big players like covermore will (everything except cancellations/amendments). I know that if i was travelling these days i would want to know that if something happened i would have cover for my medical and also to be evacuated back home to australia.

But fingers crossed you never have to claim!!!

    Also if using travelinsurancedirect.com.au

you can use this voucher code for 15% off

Why have Virgin changed their flight times

Does anyone know why Virgin has changed their 3pm flights out of Bali to 1am? We booked because we have kids and wanted this flight home and now they have reverted back to 1am flights.

    Caroline

Why have Virgin changed their flight times

You%26#39;re not alone, 3 pm was a great time and we%26#39;ve had to change ours also.

Apparently reason is it was too costly as they (Customs) had to bring in an extra Customs shift for only one flight arriving into Adelaide at that time. The 3 pm flights ended in February.

Why have Virgin changed their flight times

I don%26#39;t think anybody is happy with this one. Have changed from ';gentleman%26#39;s hours'; to the graveyard shift!

    Regards,

    David

And also, if like me you are going for a week then you will need a 30 day visa rather than a 7 day. Extra US$15.

    Regards,

    Fabric in Jakarta

Hello i am from London and i have a little boutique here which i want to design some clothes for. I want to get my fabric in Jakarta, could someone please advise me the best place to go to buy fabric? I need somwhere where they have a huge selection of fabrics from all over the world including top end designer fabrics.

I went to Sampeng market in Thailand and they had 1000%26#39;s of fabrics, it took me a whole day to look through all of them- i need something similar to this.

I heard tanah abang and mayestik market in jakarta is good for fabrics but please could someone describe what these places are like and what sort of materials they have here, and how many fabrics they have here? Do they have designer fabrics?

    Thank you

    M+L

    Fabric in Jakarta

Tanah Abang is the biggest wholesale center in Jakarta for textiles, clothing, and other fashion stuff. The selection of fabric is quite extensive, you can get anything here from cotton to fur imitation. The traders are mixed from locals to Indian-decent traders (they are famous for trading textile, aren%26#39;t they?)

The shopping center is fully air-con, the shops are small, and the corridors are quite narrow, so be prepared to squeeze with others especially on a busy day. Regarding the origin of the textile (local made, imported, or designer textile), I%26#39;m not so sure about that.

P.S. If you can%26#39;t speak Bahasa Indonesia, I suggest you bring some local who can bargain, so you%26#39;ll get better deals (especially when buying in bulk).

    Fabric in Jakarta

Tanah Abang is definitely first option if you have some local guide. Otherwise suggest you go to Mayestik (Jalan Tebah) and Pasar Baru Jakarta. Both are mainly having shops owned by local Indian trader and they definitely can communicate with you better.

Also quality wise, Tn Abang is slightly in lower-mid end (mostly local fabrics and moslem wear), while Pasar Baru and Mayestik is in higher end with mix of local and imported fabrics. Pasar Baru and Mayestik definitely have designer fabrics such as Zegna, Armani etc. but you must really know the difference as sometimes they have the copy version as well. You can%26#39;t find those in Tanah Abang.

Pasar Baru itself is an historical district and worth to be visited. This is a historical street shopping malls was catered for the Dutch during Dutch colony. You can still see some old dutch architectures there.

If Armani and Zegna%26#39;s cloth is including in your definition of designer fabrics, then you can also find it easily at Tanah Abang. Many of them are scattered on level Basement 1. Some traders sold it at very competitive price than Pasar Baru (since some of them open the shop at both Tanah Abang and Pasar Baru). If you just want to buy the textile, go to Tanah Abang, but if you want to buy the textile and have tailor to make you suit on-site, then proceed to Pasar Baru.

Most people go for local-made products at Tanah Abang, but if you look into details, certain expensive and imported goodies are also available as well.

    Kuta (3d 2n)

I%26#39;m goin with my 2 other gfs to Bali on 26-28may. Can anyone recommend what are the things that we can go apart from shopping and watching sunset? wud lurve to hear from anyone who%26#39;s willing to share.

    thanks in advance!

    Kuta (3d 2n)

assume you are staying in the south of bali for a few nights. but what you want to do depends on your preferences eg action, scenery, culture, etc. more info is needed.

    Kuta (3d 2n)

Affordable is the green Green kuta close to everything and friendly right near all the shops or the seaveiw cottages which is across the road to the beach

    Hi,

3D2N is not a very long trip. Bali island is approximately like PJ to Malacca 150KM east west and PJ to Cameron Highland 110KM north south.

Day 1 %26amp; 3 most probably take up by flight and hotel check-in/out. Most likely activities are walking around tourist centres( Kuta/Legian/Semanyak or Ubud) and along the beach near to your hotel if your hotel is nearby. U can squeeze in more activities if u arrive early and depart late.

U have 1 full day left on day 2 which u can hire a driver (400000 Rp take care of car rental %26amp; fuel) to take u sightseeing around the island and finish off with sunset watching either at Tanah Lot or Uluwatu thereafter back to hotel after dinner.

    Hope the above help

hi rockterrigal....i%26#39;m looking at water sports, bungee jumping, snorkelling if can. prolly there wont be sufficient time to do snorkelling. im interested in surfing (neva surf in my life). found out that the surfin lessons are at least for 3 days for beginners. can%26#39;t find any which provide only a day or half day lessons.

apart from that, i like watching sunset, scenery and photography. will be goin to uluwatu to watch sunset and jimbaran for seafood.

I%26#39;ve actually booked our accommodation at Hard Rock Hotel. it%26#39;s F%26amp;E package. So I thought of finding sum cool activities to do while i%26#39;m there for a short period of time. thanks for recommending mate!

    cheers

thanks Case for the info given. It%26#39;s a F%26amp;E package. so we%26#39;re doing things on our own except for the 1st day, will be goin to jimbaran for seafood and uluwatu to watch the sun setting dwn. How far is seminyak and legian from kuta? I think ubud will be far from our place to travel. I%26#39;m staying at hrd rock hotel.

    Jimbaran Ikan Bakar

    buravi.com/jalan/jimbaran/jmb_ikan_info.html

Hope this can help u to plan your trip.

    Hi,

Kuta Legian Seminyak r right next to each other.

As i m not into bungee jumping or snorkeling could not offer any suggestion. U can do a search at this forum.

Below is my personal choice of 2-3 days itinerary.

    Tegallalang rice terraces

    Kintamani

    Gunung Batur %26amp; Lake Batur

    Pura Besakih

Bratan Lake / Pura Ulun-Danu Bratan

    Danau Buyan

    Alas Kedaton Monkey Forest

    Tanah Lot (sunset %26amp; temple)

    hi

snorkeling is best on the south and east coast. good sites nearby are the bukit 1hour drive, padangbai 1 1/2 hour drive and candidasa about 2 hours drive.

for surfing i%26#39;m sure that they will do a lesson for a day, if that is what you want. here is info on learning to surf in kuta:

There are many surf schools along the beach from kuta to seminyah. When you get there you will see them if not ask someone and they will point you in the right direction.

The waves on the beach break on shallow, flat sandbanks. Between the banks are strong rips which can have good surf. Out pass the breaking waves the currents are very strong and will easily take you quite a distance along the beach. The waves are crowded with experienced foreign and local surfers, who at times come dangerously close to beginners if they get in their way. The safest places to learn are on the shallow sand banks riding the white wash and the reforming waves.

You can organize the lessons when you get there. This way you can check them out the surf schools directly so that you feel assured that they are okay.

Generally, the surf schools are well organized with good equipment and instruction.

Here are the web sites of a few of them.

    http://www.prosurfschool.com/

    http://www.odysseysurfschool.com/

    http://www.balilearntosurf.com/

    http://www.schoolofsurf.com/?home

Warning: a certain number of people both locals and tourists drown each season on Kuta鈥檚 long beach. If in trouble raise your hand. Don鈥檛 panic if you get caught in a rip or current. do not swim against it but swim at roughly a 45 degree angle with the rip towards the shore. Don鈥檛 panic and remain calm someone will help you.

as for other things to do nearby:

    visit tanah lot (temple)

drive around bukit and look at scenery and surfing

    bungee jumping at legian

    have a great trip RT

hi rockterringal, when you mentioned snorkelling at Bukit, do you mean bukit peninsula? is it a good site for snorkelling and any idea of how much it cost and how do i get there?

  • seafood...any advice?

    hi all,

can anybody advice on wats a good seafood restaurant at jimbaran? i understand that there are many there. am interested in something on the mid-price range(120,000 per person).

    thanks!!

    seafood...any advice?

haven%26#39;t eaten there in a while, but last time we had a very nice meal at Ganesha, its down the road from Hotel Puri Bambu, Jl. Pengeracikan, Kedonganan - Jimbaran. How much you will pay per head depends entirely on what you order, you pay by the weight of the seafood.

    seafood...any advice?

You are correct, there are literally hundreds of restaurants to choose from at Jimbaran. Certainly it is worth taking a look at all the restaurants set up on the beach at sunset, but don%26#39;t eat there. Instead, drive on to Sanur and dine instead on the sand there.

The seafood choice is exactly the same and less than half the price of Jimbaran. The added attraction here is that you will be dining in relative privacy instead of being packed in like a sardine amonst the thousands of other tourists.

Once upon a time jimbaran was the place to go but they have become outrageously overpriced in recent years and regular Bali goers no longer bother, going instead to one of the beachside restaurants in Sanur or, if you want to watch the sun set, one of the restaurants in seminyak.

the balieats website can give you an idea of places and prices.

    cheers!

    Hi there

We just arrived back from Bali on Sunday and we made the mistake of going to Jimbaran bay. It was our worst and most expensive meal we had. We paid more than going to the top restaurants in in Seminyak. There were cats roaming around the tables and customers. An American couple next to us were also disgusted and disappointed. I went there years ago and it isn%26#39;t the same anymore Tourist rip off.

    Jennifer

gosh jimbaran sounds like it has deteriorated into an expensive tourist trap.......unfortunately, as what happens with most tourist attractions.

i am really keen on having some seafood in bali....

if anyone has been to any good restaurants in ubud/sanur/seminyak, would be great advice.

    thanks guys.

    Hi Scoobaa,

We just arrived back and had one of our best meals of seafood at a restaurant called Blue Ocean, beachfront just up from Kamala Panthai hotel in Legian/Semanyak. Otherwise, I could recommend a trip to Lembongan Island, the restaurants there had the freshest tuna I have ever tasted.

    Cheers,

    Deb

hellloooo do u asked for JIMBARAN SEAFOOD?...then i better answer the question...in jimbaran beach near Four Season%26#39;s side...try New Bayang Cafe .. contact Ketut Suwita the owner and tell him u know his cafe from me you will not get rip off!. if you come with more then 5 peoples i%26#39;m sure they can give you very special price (below your budget). if i decided to eat somewhere and eat something good and feel happy after then i will not think the price i paid otherwise the happy feeling will gone which can%26#39;t be paid with money, if i think they are going to ripp me off then i better cook my self at home :)

Go to Gending Kedis hotel and eat at Alcedo Restaurant it has the most amazing food ever !

Our driver from Nikko Bali took us to Ganesha when we asked him to take us to Jimbaran Bay (I am not too sure whether he received any commission from doing so) -- but we had the most expensive meal during our 9 days in Bali there and it was not the best.

We had chicken satays, 2 pieces of fried chicken, a squid, a crab and 4 pieces of king prawns for Rupiahs 1 million (close to AUD 140)

have a look at this pic: flickr.com/photos/blueisthecolour/3364550167/

The guy who weight the seafood claimed that the squid was 1,5kgs, the crab was 2,4kgs and the 4 pieces of king prawns was 600gs. I don%26#39;t know how much I can trust the scale. To be honest, I think the whole thing is a total rip off.

You can have really good dinner at Legian for around AUD80 easily.

there are heaps of restaurants selling very fresh seafood apart from jimbaran which does offer a lovely sunset. personally i don%26#39;t bother going there for meals as it is overpriced and the same fresh seafood is available elsewhere.

in sanur i have had great seafood at extremely low prices at a beach front local restaurant called Kesuma where you can sit with your feet in the sand and enjoy a few drinks. about 50,000rp buys a whole snapper with chips and salad. about 4.30 each afternoon they put the seafood on display just like at jimbaran so you can choose what you would like. there are also other similar restaurants along this same stretch of beach.

here is a link which has a map and pictures

    www.mybaliguide.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi鈥?/a>

there is also a restaurant called mama putus listed there on the map but they have now moved to the road in front of the mercure. sanur has some very good restaurants.

I am very keen to see this. The most recent info I have is that it is on Wednesday and Sunday evenings. I’m leaving tomorrow –woo hoo! So I will be in Bali over Nyepi day, I’m guessing either it won’t be shown on Wednesday or it’s not a day I want to be travelling from Kuta-Ubud-Kuta. I should have a choice of 2 Sundays, but would be hoping to go this Sunday, March 22

    hi friends,

can anyone tell me which is better in terms of food and clearity of beaches???

le meridian nivana golf resort , intercontinental or the grand hyatt(nusa dua)....

    thanks

    Hi

I can only tell you about Le Meridien Nirwana Golf Resort. The food is wonderfurl, there is the Cendana Restaurant, The Nirwana, Ocean Grill and Nautilus Fun Pub to choose from as well as the Sunset Bar.

Buffet breakfast which has a huge array of dishes from which to choose is in the Cendana, this restaurant is open all day/evening for snacks and meals.

The Nirwana offers more a la carte dining, the Ocean Grill specialises in seafood and the Nautilus is based on Italian/Mediterranean dishes. All have a theme night once a week.

The beach is not really accessible, the resort is on a cliff top. The resort has a huge pool area with lagoon and water slide and poolside cabanas.

I have not visited the Intercontinental, however the beaches at Nusa Dua are usually kept in pristine condition. Sometimes, due to storms, heavy rain, the beaches of bali are littered with debris, which is usually quickly cleared up.

hope this helps you a little bit!

    cheers

    thanks

the grand hyatt occupies a prime beach front area. you can see the beach as soon as you enter the lobby. the view is gorgeous. there are numerous sun loungers under shady trees for guests on the sand and this is a popular spot for weddings. the hotels%26#39; main pool is also beach front. the water here is usually very clear and the water is calm. best for swimming at high tide. at low tide use the hotel pool. the salsa bar overlooks the ocean and is an ideal spot at sunset to sit and take in the view. a short walk will take you around to mushroom rock where there are a few locals offering cheap massages and serving local snacks. from here you can walk to the blow hole - good at high tide. there is also a local temple here. there is a good assortment of restaurants at the hyatt and within walking distance is the bali collection where there are some shops and restaurants. local food (at much more reasonable prices) is available at the local village at two locations the main gate and mengiat st. just ask for a local taxi to drop you off then each of the restaurants will offer free transport to and from your hotel. just pick up some business cards and call which ever you fancy.

apart from this i recommend you use the hyatts free shuttle bus and go to the bali hyatt in sanur. this is about a 30 minute scenic trip. you can use the facilities here at the hotel and also walk around sanur and try out some very good restaurants there as well.

Just a clarification on a previous post - Intercontinental is at Jimbaran, not Nusa Dua.

If you plan to golf or surf, definitely Nirwana. you will be closer to the beach. However, the Nirwana Beach has some tremendous waves which makes it unsuitable for potterring around.

I have stayed at the Grand Hyatt, lovely beach with no hawking allowed. you are a long way though from the tourist sites.

    Weather in April?

April is the end of the wet season and you certainly won%26#39;t have rain every day - friends of mine have been there for 10 days and only had rain twice and both times only for a very short period of time. The weather forecasts nearly always say %26#39;rain%26#39; at this time of the year - you can be sure it will rain somewhere. It may rain in Ubud, but not Kuta; it may rain in Seminyak but not Sanur - it is very localised. You will have a great holiday and a lot less rain than if you had gone in February. Just enjoy it.

My son arrived in Bali yesterday and said the weather is beautiful. April is the end of the wet season, so you could get a shower or two, but I%26#39;m sure it won%26#39;t stop you from enjoying all this beautiful island has to offer.

Hi all thanks for putting my mind at rest.

    Here%26#39;s to April in Bali.

    ULB

    Lucky bugga,

We have to wait until 7 May.............. Have fun

    Dwambo

Which one is better? Discovery or Ramada Bintang Bali?

I am planning to go to Bali in April only for three nights. Last time, I stayed in Padma Bali and I loved it very much. But I would like to try other hotel this time.

This time I would like to stay in Santika Beach Hotel. Unfortunately, it is fully booked.

Next hotels in my list are Discovery Kartika Plaza and Ramada Bintang Bali, but I can%26#39;t really decide, since travelers%26#39; reviews are kind of mixed.

The most important factor for me is the bathroom. Better if it is not too small and has bath up.

Other than visiting spa and having lunch/dinner, I guess I will stay at the hotel most of the times.

Please advise which one should I choose.

    Thanks.

Which one is better? Discovery or Ramada Bintang Bali?

I can%26#39;t comment on Ramada but have stayed at Kartika Plaza three times in the last 4 years, always found the service excellent and location is fantastic.

We stay in the ocean facing rooms and the bathroom, whilst you could not describe as luxurious, is always clean and has everything you require.

May I suggest the spa at the Green Garden Beach Resort, they have wonderful packages and really reasonable prices.

Have a great time, we will be there in May for 3 weeks and I can%26#39;t wait!!

Which one is better? Discovery or Ramada Bintang Bali?

Both are great resorts. The upside of Discovery is the location being closer to everything, having the mall out the front. No doubt Ramada will be cheaper than Discovery. Ramada about a 10min walk down from Discovery. Both have large rooms.

If i had a choice i%26#39;d pick the Discovery

Hi there, have just returned from Bali yesterday, and were staying next to the Discovery and it looked like a very nice well spread out property - beach frontage. If we were to go to Kuta again we would probably stay there. Have you looked at other properties in Legian or Seminyak as that looked like a nicer option than Kuta which is noisy and congested??

    Hi, there.

    Thanks all for your inputs.

Unfortunately, it was too late to get a room in Discovery. Being long week end in Indonesia on that particular week end, I think people from Jakarta already booked from long time ago :(

I decided to try Kokonut suites at Petitenget this time.

Delva, thanks for the spa suggestion. Will find time to check that one. On my last visit to Bali (earlier this month), I tried Balisari Spa Center in Tuban. I read about it the forum and decided to try. It was good, service was excellent and the prices are very reasonable. I tried stony massage and Rice goddes body spa packages. Two days in a row! :)

Nearing40, I stayed in Padma Bali at Legian. The beach was less crowded, it was not private beach though. But compare to Jayakarta, the beach was too crowded. If you don%26#39;t mind with dark sands, you may try Sofitel Seminyak. Can%26#39;t really say much about the hotel, since I have never stay there, but they have private beach and very popular. Tried to book 2 nights there last time and it was fully booked! I would love to stay there sometime.

Have a good holiday! if you don%26#39;t have any luck with that accomodation, on our holiday we also stayed at The Bali Hyatt - Sanur and would strongly recommend!

    Kuta Seaview Cottages

Hi, has anyone stayed at the Kuta Seaview lately.

We stayed there quite a few years ago and I believe it%26#39;s been renovated.

Would it be suitable for 2 25yr old females first trip to Bali. They would like 3-4star with nice gardens and Bali style bungalows.

    Thanx

    ddoodz

    Kuta Seaview Cottages

I%26#39;ve seen it and I think it would be a good choice close to everything and across the road to the beach

    Kuta Seaview Cottages

It also has a great pool. The rooms are a little cramped and it is not as luxurious as some of the places in Seminyak, but it has all the bells and whistles that you will need for a beach holiday.

My sister stayed there in June last year and we popped in to have a look around.

She paid USD 68 per night including tax and breakfast.

Stayed at Sari Yasa Samudra in Sept last year. Is cheap, basic but clean, opposite Kuta Beach on the corner of Poppies Lane 1. Close to everything %26amp; great if on a budget. am heading over in may %26amp; will stay again 4 sure.

    you will have a ball!!!

forgot to say only paid $30 a night

  • Interconnecting rooms in Bali Hyatt Sanur

Does any one know whether this hotel has interconnecting rooms for 2 adults and 2 children who will be aged only 7 and 10.

Our friends do not ant the children to be separate and far away so interconnecting would be ideal as everyone seems to think that only 2 adults and 1 child can be accommodated which means they will have to separate into two rooms.

Any help please on this one.

Interconnecting rooms in Bali Hyatt Sanur

hi i am pretty sure there are a number of interconnecting rooms.

you are right there is only 3 people per room. i king and 1 roll away or twin beds + 1 rollaway.

just e mail the hotel re connecting rooms.

it is the grand hyatt at nusa dua that can have 4 people per room.

i think the bali hyatt offers something like a 50% discount for the second room for kids. just ask

Interconnecting rooms in Bali Hyatt Sanur

Thanks for this reply the Hotel does not answer any emails that is the problem, that is why I posted this topic hoping someone would know.

    Thanks again

the hotel usually answers e mails. i have found e mails take longer to get replied to when i send them to most places in bali, not just here but generally speaking. the hyatt is a great choice, hope they answer you soon

Hi there, we have just spent a week at The Bali Hyatt - Sanur with our 3 children aged 5, 8 and 11 in early March. We had an interconnecting rooms with King Beds in both. Our 2 girls shared the king while our son had a rollaway. We all absolutely loved the Hyatt and will be returning hopefully next year. We included the breakfast in our room rate which was well worth it. Its also worth requesting a ground floor room as the balcony/verandah goes straight out to the lawn and beach. have a great holiday! Julie

please check the dates b4 answering. this post is extremely old

Hi nearing, glad you enjoyed your stay at the Hyatt. Rather than resurrect this ancient topic from the TA graveyard to tell us all how nice the hotel is, it might be worth you posting a review in the Reviews section.

I know that if I%26#39;m looking for hotel reviews, I%26#39;ll search the Reviews section rather than the forums.

    Cheers!

Hotel stays for people with a disability????

Hello there all you wise travellers out there

I have a problem which is major to me, but probably not many others. I have a chance to stay at several hotels in Bali, the Alila chain. I love the look of, and reviews of the Alila in Candi Dasa and also at Ubud. BUT 30 years ago I had a brain tumour removed and as a result I have poor balance on my left side. Yet I continued to work full-time (I have just recently retired). Yes, if there are stairs anywhere, I need the handrail. Also a reasonably smooth surface for walking is good, though I have managed many other kinds of surfaces in the last 30 years.

HOWEVER, TRIPADVISOR REVIEWS GENERALLY ADVISE THAT BOTH HOTELS (i.e. at Ubud and Candi Dasa) ARE NOT RECOMMENDED FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES.

I%26#39;m SO disappointed. Please can you advise? If you%26#39;ve been to either, what do YOU think?

Hotel stays for people with a disability????

    Hi,

Can I recommend that you email the properties and explain your circumstances, if there is a problem they may be able to offer assistance in the form of a staff member to help stabilise you in the problem areas. Most Balinese would be only too happy to help you in any way they can.

I don%26#39;t know the properties, but I assume that the ';not suitable for people with disabilities'; would mean steps. Handrails may or may not be installed.

Hotel stays for people with a disability????

Thanks so much, Whinnie, for your sensible reply. I was a bit afraid that I might get the wrong person replying to my query, or someone with a vested interest. But if I don%26#39;t try...... and I don%26#39;t want to miss out on any experience because I didn%26#39;t do my homework properly!

Let us know how you go and if it isn%26#39;t possible maybe we can give you some other alternatives. Good luck.

  • taxi fare from Febris Hotel to Airport? Nyepi Day?Help!!

    Hi,

I would like to know the fare from Febris Hotel to the Airport? Is it the same as from the airport to Kuta? Which taxi should i take or should i call the taxi from the airport?

I will in Bali next week and on 26 Mar is a Nyepi Day. Is it true that we are not allowed to go out of the hotel on that day? Why?

I will reach Bali airport this Sun at 21.35pm. Can i know how long does it take to reach Febris Hotel and where should i buy drinking water/ice mountain near the hotel at that time?

I am meeting the driver on next Monday and should i pay him 1st or on the last day?

Lastly, has anyone bought disposable contact lens in Bali?

    Cheers,

    Sue

    Sue

taxi fare from Febris Hotel to Airport? Nyepi Day?Help!!

hi, the febris do offer free airport transfers on request so e mail them and ask. they require flight details in advance. taxi fares are cheaper back to the airport should you choose to use one. they constantly go past the hotel. just ask at the lobby and they will flag one down. stick with bluebird taxis when ever possible as they have reliable metres. the febris hotel is only a 5 minute drive from the airport, extremely close. as for water there is a small supermarket just across the road from the febris and to your right. you cannot miss it. they stock a good range of essentials so get your water here. there is also a good money exchanger at the kodak shop which you will see. same area. use them they are honest.

as for paying the driver it is best to give him some money to cover each days expenses rather than pay him at the end. if you paid the full amount for each day this would be fair.

i have bought prescription glasses in bali so you will be right getting contact lenses. just shop for them during your first couple of days in case they need to order them. the closest optometrist to the febris is at the discovery mall or kuta square (next closest). about a 10 and 15 minute walk. nyepi day is a day of silence so be prepared to stay at the hotel for a relaxing day. there is a dvd shop next door to the hotel selling very cheap copies maybe buy a couple of movies and relax around the pool for example. if you do a google search for nyepi day you can find out more about it.

the febris is a very good hotel, you will enjoy it. they have a good buffet breakfast.

taxi fare from Febris Hotel to Airport? Nyepi Day?Help!!

Bali completely shuts down for Nyepi day. No cars, walking on streets, activities of any kind. Beaches are closed and the airport closes for 24 hours. It goes from 0600 to 0600 the following day.

Its a sort of Hindu new year, observed on Bali. There is a Wikipedia entry on Nyepi day for more background.

Snooky, I am interested in the prescription glasses. Did you save a lot compared to the Aussie prices? Is it worth buying in Bali if you have health cover and can lodge a claim if you purchase is Aus?

    Thanks

Hi sparky, as far as your health fund rebate is concerned it is best to check with them direct and ask what / if they will cover. every fund is different.

you can get eye tests done in bali or get your eyes tested here and take a copy of the script or your existing glasses for them to copy. we have had glasses made in both phuket and bali.

personally we have saved hundreds BUT i think it partly depends on your type of lenses and what frames you choose. the cost of frames varies considerably. often there are good sales on so it pays to shop around during the first day or two you are in bali and go back to the place you feel you are getting the best deal. single vision lenses are quick to make. anything from 45 minutes to one day. things like progressive lenses can take 5 - 7 days as they order the lenses for you. so far what we have purchased have been %26#39;good%26#39; and we have had no problems.

I%26#39;d also suggest you try the Kumala Pantai but they may be fairly well booked.kumalapt@indosat.net.id, (ask for suite prices as well as room prices as it may work out cheaper between three to book a suite)

Sari Beach next to Puri Raja or Maharta Hotel both beachfront and smaller properties.

Jayakarta Hotel beachfront, hotel rooms or the apartments.

The Lokha Hotel Legian, on Jl Padma (more modern looking hotel),pool in centre of room blocks, not far from the beach.

In Poppies Lane 2(Kuta) is Satriya Cottages,a 100%Balinese hotel. I had a look at a Superior room, good size, as is bathroom. Gardens manicured, lovely pool with swim up bar and jacuzzi. It is very quiet once you step inside hotel grounds.I would be very happy to stay here.info@satriyacottages.com send email to %26#39;Dipper%26#39; and ask for his %26#39;rates%26#39;,the normal rate 650,000rup for Superior room.

Masa Inn Poppies 2, also would be happy to stay here, two pools.

I recently stayed at Green Garden Hotel,Kartika Plaza Tuban,email:info@greenbali.com. Rooms good size, very clean, only a small property, or their sister hotel across the road the Febris Hotel. Rooms also a good size. They are not beachfront.

The hotel is right on the beach, has a pool, great food, wonderful staff, good rooms with marble bathrooms and you can walk to some great restaurants and shops. You can email them at sbi@indo.net.id

I agree, Puri Raja or Sari Beach Hotel are both good.

    kamala pantai

Mandira Resort and Spa is great too, lovely bungalows like you are after and close to shops, restaurants and beach.

stayed at puri raja and kumula pantai last two weeks. would not stay at puri unless you are aussie, but not bad. KP is a little more sedate, but very nice. I think KP is a fair bit nicer.

yes i agree with everyone recommendation for you or you can also try seminyak is a lot quite than other but still lots of shop.

What is the local domestic airline from Denpasar to Jakarta?

Can anyone recommend an airline to use, need a return flight from Bali to Jakarta to see our son at the end of our holiday. Thanks, Sue

What is the local domestic airline from Denpasar to Jakarta?

    What about Garuda?

What is the local domestic airline from Denpasar to Jakarta?

    try Travel Indo

    http://www.travelindo.com/index.php

I highly recommend Madala for their performance and extreme dedication to safety. Cheap too.

Hints - ask for exit row seat, for extra leg room. Don%26#39;t sit in the row before the exit row, the seats do not recline.

From Jakarta, get any F%26amp;B before passing through security. There is no place to get anything to eat or drink after that.

Thankyou for your replies. Garuda came in at around $450 return each Winnie, but Madala prices are looking pretty good, a lot cheaper actually. Had never heard of this airline before so thanks for the recomendation yumanote. We cannot change our return flight from Bali to Jakarta, so have to do a quick 2 night trip to Jakarta and then back to Bali for our flight home. Any savings are a blessing. Thanks again, Sue

Have you tried Air Asia, I used them last Christmas for Bali/Jakarta flights.

I took Air Asia roundtrip Jakarta-Bali since it was the least expensive and allowed me to book and pay online.

But note that they have a 15kg weight limit on checked luggage and there is a charge for each KG above 15kg.

And you may want to pay the nominal fee for priorty boarding since it can be a mad rush for seatings on general boarding.

There are more airlines, e.g. Lion, Merpati etc. Garuda is always more booking outside of country. A return Garuda is less than 2,000,000rupiah return from a local agent in Bali. No problem getting tickets outside of holidays. Recommend you plan arrival and departure times well to avoid the worst of Jakarta traffic. Your son should be able to sort this all out.

    Thankyou all for your help,

Unfortunately we have had to cancel our Jakarta plans as our son arrives Jakarta 16th April, and will be heading straight out to motocross events for the whole weekend, so we will miss him in Jakarta, we had already extended our bali stay for flight home too: what a bummer :)

Guess we will have to find somewhere to stay for 2 nights. As it was our son%26#39;s first time to Jakarta( he%26#39;s all new to this and just turned 18) also we just wanted to get him settled in, he%26#39;s there for 2 months. We will be going to see him at a later date, hopefully via Bali for a day or two.

But now we know which airlines to use for our eventual trip to Jakarta. Thanks again, Sue

Finishing up our honeymoon on Lembongan

Hello everyone -- thanks so far for everyone%26#39;s comments, suggestions, and opinions. So far we%26#39;ve been able to plan almost all of our honeymoon destinations and activites.

For the last leg of our trip - 3 nights %26amp; 4 days, we will be staying at Batu Karang on Nusa Lembongan Island.

What we would like to know from you all is what are the ';do not miss'; activities and attractions on the island ?? We want to be able to make sure we hit all of the memorable and exciting aspects and opportunities the island has to offer.

So please let us know as much as possible about the area. We don%26#39;t want to miss a thing........

    Thanks.........

Finishing up our honeymoon on Lembongan

There is not a great deal to do on Lembongan unless you are a surfer or diver. The island is very small and very quiet, with only a few shops in the main village area, although there are a number of cafes and restaurants. I would suggest that you hire a local prahu or jukung (fishing boat) and head to Grammats which is a great snorkelling bay around the other side of the island. The snorkelling and diving in Lembongan is great, crystal clear water and great fish and coral. You could also go and visit a local village and there is a great walk from the main village along the clifftop to Mushroom Bay. Also take a boat to Nusa Penida (neighbouring island) and take a walk around. You might be lucky to catch a ceremony.

  • Must you reserve drivers in advance?

It looks like we will be in Bali in October, staying almost 2 weeks total, in Amed, Ubud and Sanur. While I%26#39;m a planner by nature, I realy like to decide what we%26#39;ll do for the day once there. Will it be fine to allow our hotels to arrange drivers we need for 1/2 or perhaps full day trips (do they do that?). Or is it better to reserve a recommended driver before getting to the island?

    Thank you for your thoughts.

Must you reserve drivers in advance?

if you get your hotel to arrange a driver / tour you will be paying a lot more. you can walk out of your hotel and get a driver from the street. in bali you will constantly be offered %26#39;transport%26#39;. some of these guys are very good and you will have to bargain for a good price. since it is your first trip it would be a good idea to book a recommended driver for at least one or two days. that way you can e mail each other and get some great ideas on things to see and do and it will help get the most out of a day tour. some of the drivers off the street will be good at helping you and others will just take you where you say you want to go so some planning with a recommended driver does has it%26#39;s advantages. i use recommended drivers and drivers off the street depending where / what i am doing. Dean and his team of drivers are excellent and so to is Eddy Kus. other people will provide a %26#39;favourite%26#39; driver as well. even if you book a recommended driver you can always decide on the day what you will like to see and they are good at filling in the day with extra stops, good restaurants etc.

Must you reserve drivers in advance?

I agree with Snooky, just walk out the front of your hotel and book a driver. This is what I always do and have never had a problem. If I know I am heading off somwhere, I will organise a driver the day before. It%26#39;s always a good idea to check out their car, see if it%26#39;s roadworthy and air conditioned, and you can also bargain for a good price which both of you are happy with.

Advice for 2 days tour from Ubud

    Hi guys,

I%26#39;ll be leaving this Sun to Bali and will be staying 3 nights at Ubud + 3 nights at Seminyak. Intend to do most of my sightseeing from Ubud if possible.

Here%26#39;s the suggested plan I got from my driver (communicated via email)

    Day 1 (Mon)

    Tanah lot temple

Jatilwuih best r\and spectacular rice terrace

Pacung beatiful mountain view and rice terrace

    kuning fruit,vegetbale and flowers market

Bedugul and lake beratan with floting temple

    -Mengwi royal family temple

    Day. 2 (Tues)

    Ubud cultural village

    Batuan balinese compound house

    Tegenungan water fall

    Tampak siring spring water temple

    Gunung Kawi temple

Kintamani and penelokan for best view volcano and lake batur

    Bangli Kehen temple.

is there any other attractions worth visiting and not included? For Jimbarin and Uluwata, I plan to go when I%26#39;m at Seminyak.

also, am I able to complete Ubud town itself in 1/2day by myself?

for the Monky Forest, what%26#39;s there to see apart from monkeys??

    thanks a lot

the jayakarta is a short trip from the airport. i would try bargaining with the drivers out the front where you exit the airport door who have vans for around 100,000 to 150,000rp. IF they ask for much over this say %26#39;no thanks i will get two taxis%26#39; and they will soon negotiate rather than lose the fare. just walk along and look at the vans. some are bigger than others. in bali seat belts are not essential except for the front seat. basically if you don%26#39;t mind smaller children can sit on laps and you would easily fit all of you and your luggage in a van. do bargain someone will accept your offer.

    Hotel transfers to Jayakarta

Thanks for your reply which has helped me a lot. Given that we don%26#39;t arrive into Bali until 8pm is there likely to be a shortage of drivers around?

thankyou very much and for your holiday wishes

you won%26#39;t have trouble getting a van at 8pm. the drivers are there all the time hoping and waiting for work as this is their lively hood. try and stick with the 100,000rp. don%26#39;t worry about pre booking a driver. there will be heaps of offers for transport.

Lenghty Bandung Shopping Trip report 6-9April 2008

This was my second time visiting Bandung. This time there was no sightseeing, purely shopping, shopping and shopping (a revenge of my first trip last year which was inadequate due to much sightseeing).

    Day 1 - Sunday 6 April 2008

We landed at Jakarta Airport at 1040 via Air Asia flight. After claiming the luggage, we proceeded to the airport exit and our driver was already waiting for me. We hired the same driver that we took on our last year Bandung trip at Rp 750,000 (all in) for day 1 Jakarta+Bandung. Price was reasonable as I have hired him before and satisfied with his service. I did initially intend to get other driver which offered lower rate, but considering the risk of hiring a new driver which service quality is still unknown, I decided to drop the idea. The first place that we went was Tanah Abang, a very huge market selling all kinds of textiles from the scarf to cloth. As we have been to Pasar Baru Bandung last year, we decided to check Tanah Abang on this trip as our flight landed in Jakarta. Moving around the hugh market cramp with stalls, shops and people was quite inconvenience for us as we were bringing along our two daughters of age 7 and 2. We leaved the stroller in the car as the natures of the walkway make it impossible to stroll along. Lucky for us that we have shortlisted what to get in Tanah Abang . My wife bought some tudungs, telekongs and other textiles for her and friends at rates 80% cheaper than Malaysia. Same quality…at avery.. very.. very.. cheap prices… Dump the whole shopping bag into the Avanza and proceeded to Bandung. On the way to Jakarta-Bandung highway, we dropped by at Monas for a quick photos. As it was Sunday, moving around was quite easy (except Tanah Abang area, where most of the locals were doing their shopping). Stopped by at one of the rest area and have Nasi Padang Sederhana for lunch. The price was really “sederhana” as we only pay Rp100,000 (RM35) for 3 adults and 2 kids, with almost 10 pieces of ayam kampong and 8/9 dishes.

Reach Bandung around 5 pm. Check in into Grand Serela at Jalan Riau. Get discounted rate through local agent for Superior room at RM161 or Rp460,000 (Internet Rate is Rp495,000 while retail rate is Rp7xx,000). After refreshing ourselve, we headed to Rumah Moda (which to me is a benchmark of Bandung FO). “Attacked” Rumah Moda till 9pm and refreshed ourselves with Kopi durian at BlueMonster outlet in front of the entrance. It was raining heavily but their customer service over there was superb. They have their staff to carry umbrella and escorted the customers all the way to their car. Compared to last year when I went there, I noticed that this time around, there were more and varity of branded items that suits our taste. Purchased few Marks %26amp; Spensers, American Eagles, Versaces %26amp; Hugos. Got back to the hotel and proceed directly to our room to sleep as we are too damn tired.

    Day - Monday, 7 April 2008

We not hiring any driver for today as we intend to check nearby FOs along the Jl Riau/Mardinata. Have a nice breakfast at the hotel, with variety of local and continental dishes. Made our move towards to FOs (which is about 100m from Grand Serela). As it was still early, most of the FO yet to open. Went to Branded FO (in fact we are the 1st customer), and spend about an hour shopping. Finally came out carrying few bags of items (mostly Burberry, Tommy, Armani, Guess %26amp; Osh Kosh). Next we crossed the road to Terminal Tas. A lot of branded handbag like Channel %26amp; Gucci, but the prices were out of our “FO price” range (although they were extremely cheaper compared to KL). Went through their sale/discount section and few items seemed attracting us. However, we decided to hold on 1st as many FOs yet to be explored. Next, we crossed the road again to Summit. Get few T-shirts of Nike %26amp; Versace brand. Refresh ourselves with Sorso, the famous bottled ice tea and then charged into Heritage. Quite disappointed with Heritage this time as I did remembered grabbing few Manchester United Nike original jerseys last year. This time around, none could be found. Most of the stuff were too outdated by design. As it was raining outside, we decided to check the new Heritage next door. Bought Moritz’s full leather sandal at Rp900,000 (70% disc). Once the rain stop, we went to next door Dakken Café, a bungalow style cafe serving continental and local food. Our menu; Bali Beef Tenderloin steak, Nasi Goreng special, Hainan Chicken Rice, Nachos, Pisang Molen, Herbal Tea %26amp; Kopi Durian, cost us about Rp120,000 (RM42). Wow what a bargain considering the size of their meal and how delicious and tender the steak was. After lunch, on the way back to hotel, we dropped by Stamp FO. Bought nothing as most of the stuff were more toward urban young group (although we did have 2 Rp50000 vouchers with us). Once in our room, my kids were too tired and they just want to sleep. I refreshed myself and decided to explore Jl Riau/Mardinata on my own. Checked out Formen, Ranariri and Oasis. Purchase Armani executive jacket at Rp180,000 (which I missed out on my last Bandung trip) and a belt (Rp 79000) at Oasis. Proceeded towards the Jl Dago/Jl Riau junction and reached Merdeka Outlet (opposite Bandung Indah Plaza). I really enjoyed my time here as this outlet carried variety of men apparels. Among the items that I bought were Mark %26amp; Spenser casual, Dockers and Tommy Hillfiger. It’s raining again and decided to wait for a while. While waiting I could not resisted the temptation of the display items and ended up getting few more T-shirts. As the rain seemed not stopping and no cab can be catched, I decided to brave the rain and walk back. Upon reaching the Riau Junction Mall, I bought an umbrella as my shirt and pant were now soaking. Still no free cab around and I have to endure walking at the road side that full of muddy water (typical during rainy day). Finally managed to get a cab and as I am now shivering cold, I just informed him to quickly get me back to the hotel. No meter was used and upon reaching the hotel, the driver quote me for Rp50,000 for the short ride. Looking straight into his eyes, I argued that that Rp50,00 for that short ride was ridiculous. Finally, we settled for Rp10,000 (minimum charges according to him). Walked up to the room and have a nice shower.

    Day 3 – 8 April 2008

The driver picked us at 9 am as promised and upon our request he brought us to Bale Anak, a special FO for kids. Nice FO with 2/3 attached houses in one compound. They also have a big playground (chargeable though) that will make your kids busy when you were shopping. Bought some stuff for my kids, nephews %26amp; nieces. Then we checked out another outlet 100m down the road but none suit our taste. Moving around during the peak hours was not an problem as my driver familiar with a lot of “lorong tikus” to bypass them.

We dropped by Kartika Sari for some kuih lapis, krepek and traditional cookies. I realized that the prices were quite expensive compared to Bandung standard. It’s raining heavily again, and we just went to nearby Episode and Grande FO to shop for clothes and wallets. End up spending almost Rp800,000 in these 2 outlets, before proceeding to lunch. At first we want to go to Kampung Daun, but upon the driver advice (certain road were flooded) and considering that we have few more outlets to explore, we settled for Sambrasa, a Sunda restaurant somewhere near the area. Nice ambient environment packed with mostly local and Jakartan. Inside the restaurant there was a corner full of dishes spreading from one corner to another. Most of the dishes were half-cooked and preserve with spices/bumbu. We just informed the attendant our table number, and selected the dishes we want and how they should be cooked (grilled, fried, etc). I was spoilt for choice and have to rely on my driver to select them as most of the dishes were unfamiliar to me. Among the dishes we had were Gurame Bakar Kichap, Ayam Kampung (made, pop, kemeri), pegedil, cumil (squid) etc. End up paying Rp250,000. It wasn’t that cheap but totally reasonable considering the amount that we ordered. Surprisingly my kids seems to be quite fit this time (maybe after charging up with ayam kampong at Sambrasa :)). As such, we just continued to Amanda Brownies new outlet at Jl Dago and purchased about 10 boxes of brownies to bring home ( a must ole-ole for your friend and relative if you are visiting Bandung in my opinion). Compared to Kartika Sari, Amanda’s were cheaper and tastier (again, in my opinion). We checked nearby Level FO where I finally found the Man United jersey, but they not have my size. There’s goes my dream of wearing the MU jersey with the big AIG logo in front. Finally, I settled for non-Nike Man United t-shirt instead (the only one with available size). At the same FO, we bought 2 Burberry jeans at Rp175000/pc. Upon exiting Level, we sighted the Edward Forrer FO across the road and decided to check it out. Got a nice leather utility bag for my teen daughter at Rp80,000. They currently running a promotion at 30% discount for early bird (before 10am) and late shopper (after 8pm) but we missed it (anyway what I am getting is already so cheap). As time was already at 7pm, we decided to forego Victoria FO (another popular FO) and straight to Rumah Moda again for our final shopping. I decided to just let my wife do the shopping, while I and my kids having drinks at the BlueMonster stall. Yes, the ice blended Kopi Durian again (I think by this time we have addicted to this drink). We off to hotel around 9pm. Pay the driver for our 3rd day rental at Rp450,000.

That’s the end of our shopping spree :(

    Day 4 – 9 April 2008

Make use of the hotel free airport shuttle service (as no more money left except for the airport tax). Everyone in my family was now flashing their Armani, Burberry, Nike and Hugo apparel.

Reach LCCT at 1340 and we slowly sneak the Malaysian custom lanes before exiting :).

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Below are some of my opinion that I will like to share for those who are planning for Bandung trip. Use them only for your reference as I am not local and expert (like Bandung Man) and please do not blame me if anything did not come out as what I said.

    Tour agent/ driver/car rental

    - Select the one you really comfortable. Do not care much about the price difference (did not vary much anyway). Quality service is the most important.

    - Do not simply take agent/driver that publicly posting their phone numbers/name in the forum. Frankly, I did not believe them. Ask other forummers that you are familiar with. If you read between the lines of some posting, you will realize that some agent do disguise as a traveler/forummer in the forum.

    - A reasonable “all-in” car rental (incl gas, supir) will be around Rp400,000 to Rp500,000 per day. Additional charges may applied for Jakarta and outskirt Bandung trip. By taking lower rate, you may compromise the quality. Higher rate means you are ripped-off.

    - If you are adventure enough, you can try angkot (local minivan) for a short distance.

    - Take blue taxi if you really need one. Most of them use meter. If they did not, be prepared to counter their quoted rate (like what I did).

    Hotel

    - Try to find hotel near FO outlets. This will save you 1/2 day of car rental.

    - 2* hotel/motel near FOs is not that bad as what few of the forummers comment. Save your money on hotel and use it for more shopping. Among the hotel that can be considered are Royal Dago and Patra Jasa at Upper Dago, Utari (Lower Dago), Bumi Aseh (Jl Riau). To me these hotels are value for money. I did stay at Royal Dago last year and except for the facilities and environment (which I care less), the room is about the same as Grand Serela. Anyway you are leaving hotel early morning and back late night. So why need a hotel room like a palace?

    - If you willing to pay slightly higher, go for Grand Serela at Jl Riau or New Sanny Rosa near Rumah Moda. For those who willing to fork out more than Rp600,00 per night, Guellis boutique hotel is the strategic choice as it is located within the popular FOs like Episode, Grande, Victoria and Blossom.

    Moving around

    - Get a driver to move you around as FOs are spread all over Bandung. It is not like Bukit Bintang, KL where all are in one place. Few are located in one area where else other are located in other areas. Most of the outlets are old bungalow lot converted into shop houses (to Malaysian: they are similar to Jalan Maarof, Bangsar)

    - Avoid bringing small kids for shopping spree. Their walkways are not pedestrian friendly. Your path will be blocked by these mobile carts/stalls, a big tree and holes. Stroller is not advisable as ramp did not exist when crossing a compound entrance. Even all FOs do not have a ramp.

    - Avoid going there during rainy season like now. It is really a nightmare walking along the walkway with muddy water.

    Shopping

    - Once you find an item that meet your taste and price range, grab it. You do not have plenty of time to do shop around for comparison. And you may also not finding it in other FOs.

    - Be careful, I still believe that few FOs sell fake item too. Do not think much about the brand, but go for the material quality instead.

    - Tip for identifying original product (may not be true) is to look at the label area, which is normally torn off or darkened to hide the identity. Also look around for few marks of QC failure (ref arrow, label, etc) on the item itself.

    - Do not expect latest design as most of the items sold in the outlets are export surplus, QC reject or return stock.

    - Don%26#39;t waste your time shopping at their mall, the items are almost the same price as KL.

    Shopping malls opening hours

Are the shopping malls closed on Fridays? and what are the usual opening hours?

    Thanks

    Shopping malls opening hours

Oh dear, please don%26#39;t see Indonesia as a Muslim country. We%26#39;re quite diverse...

    Air-con shopping malls open 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Most of them have official opening hours from 10AM to 10PM. Some restaurants/cafes/pubs inside the mall might extend their opening hours until 11PM or until wee hours in the weekend.

Some malls also have midnight shopping programme every last week of the month, usually open until 12midnight.

Other type of shopping place like wholesale center (such as Mangga Dua and Tanah Abang) open from morning and close in the late afternoon (4PM)

    Shopping malls opening hours

    Dear Usha00,

Most shopping malls are open 7 days a week, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. However, some shopping malls, usually for wholesaler buying, open from 10 a.m. to 04 - 05 p.m. (e.g. Metro Tanah Abang,Pasar Blok A and ITC Mangga Dua). Some electronic shopping centers in Mangga Dua area also closed around 5 p.m.

On Fridays, even during praying time, most shops remain open. Friday afternoon till Sundays, many shopping malls are crowded with shoppers or people who just come for dining or just relaxing.

    Rgds

Great news!!! Thanks for your replies

Ahh Cirque, Indonesia is a Muslim country.

Having said that malls are open 7 days per week and only close on the most major of public holidays and even if then usually just for part of the day.

OMG Camsean... I can%26#39;t believe what you%26#39;ve said... Indonesia is a Muslim country? I believe my teacher in elementary school does not say so... Indonesia is the most populous Muslim-majority nation; however, NO REFERENCE IS MADE TO ISLAM in the Indonesian CONSTITUTION. In fact, the government identify 5 official religion in this country. Although

Quite contrast with the %26#39;real%26#39; muslim country such as Pakistan, Iran, and Malaysia right?

So if you%26#39;re define a Muslim country as a country whose constitution is based on Islam, then Indonesia is NOT.

But if you think just because most of the citizen is Islam then you think it is a Muslim country, you%26#39;re just generalizing something which is big chance turn out NOT TRUE (I don%26#39;t mean to discredit certain race/people but those who always associate Arabs with terrorist, then these people also generalize thing -- WHICH IS NOT TRUE. Arab nation is not all that bad. Certain part - UAE, Bahrain, Qatar are in the booming development of their country, having more diverse workforce than anywhere else.

As a conclusion: associate Arab with terrorist or associate Indonesia as Muslim country? You%26#39;re just generalizing and... IT%26#39;S NOT GOOD because clearly you don%26#39;t base it on the FACT!

well religion is a very sensitive topic I believe...

But for some extent, I agreed with cirque that Indonesia indeed not a moslem country even for some extent the moslem here more liberal than in Malaysia.

I just sick seeing people generalize everything (and this very thing is the root why there%26#39;s no peace on earth)... As a global traveller, one must really be OPEN MINDED and not generalize (because everything is unique). Someone must ready to look, observe, see, and value things everywhere they go.

It%26#39;s not about race or religion or other sensitive topic I want to bring up, but I just want to straight things up.

Indonesia is not an ';Islamic'; Country ? Are you sure?.

Malaysia%26#39;s constitution is not based on Islamic law as

well but we are an Islamic country.

Also , whats wrong if Indonesia is an Islamic or Muslim country?

    Oh, guys, come on!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What all this religious discussion has in common with mall opening hours?

By the way camsean is now a DE (am I the last to see it?????????), I was off-line for a couple a weeks. So better late than never, Camsean, welcome to our tight and amicable Jakarta DE team.

The Journal of my trip to Java

    Day 1, Sunday, 22nd February 2009

We started the trip to Java on 22nd February 2009. This time I was guiding 2 young and friendly Canadians that I was recommended to by one of my customers who did Semeru trek with me in 2006.

They originally wanted to go to Lombok but for some reason they had to cancel that trip. Both have just graduated from university. Stephanie studied tourism and hotel management and Marie is a biologist now. Waiting for the date of my trip schedule, they agreed to stay in Lovina. I picked them up at one of the hotels near the dolphin statue. It took us only 1 hour 40 minutes to get to Gilimanuk. Unlike Padang Bay to Lembar, ferry crossing from Bali to Java and vice versa is very convenient. You do not have to wait for the ferry as there are at least 5 ferries waiting for you, and it only takes 1 hour to get to the other harbor. We had lunch at one of the workers%26#39; home at Taman Sari village near a sulfur depot in Banyuwangi, the nearest city to Ijen. Whenever I do my Ijen tour I normally have lunch at the workers%26#39; home, and they arrange who will host the meal. It was Mrs. Budi%26#39;s turn to provide us lunch. Mr Budi works at the so called Solfatara (the crater where sulfur is produced). He was the one who arranged the porters to help Nicolas HULOT make the documentary on Ijen. For the French, Nicolas is quite famous as an environmentalist, but hey, one of my customers who happens to be his neighbor says he often gets disturbed by the roar of his helicopter engine when Nicolas goes home.

After lunch we drove up through the rain forest of Ijen Baluran National Park. I used to see many black monkeys before 1990. I wonder where in the world they are now, and the other animals,... Rangers believe that there are still some leopards in the thick jungle. Scientists still pay a visit to this area and find out some footprints of the animals as well as their droppings. No rangers have ever spotted one since 1989 but last year a deer in a cage near the ranger%26#39;s park was missing and people are still speculating who would be strong enough to break into the cage and drag this deer out?

The space for the animals in most of the jungles in Indonesia is decreasing. In Sumatra, tens of people are killed by Sumatran tigers every year. Two people were killed on 2nd March 2009 and 1 on the day I hiked to Ijen, and 2 on 21st and 3 on 31st January 2009. The local people said that the old tigers do not have the ability to compete with the young ones to catch the prey, and some get angry because the humans catch their baby tigers and many of these beautiful felines feel threatened by all these illegal lodgings. I notice that most of the victims are those who stay at the settlements near the area where they cut a lot of trees. There are only about 250 tigers now. In 2000 there were more than 1,000 tigers. Sumatran tigers are just an inching away from extinction. I am sure the leopards in Java are following their Javan tigers’ extinction. The last Javan tiger was reported shot in 1970.

If you really look at the area before entering rain forest of Ijen, you will notice that the government has extended their coffee plantation by cutting down so many trees. When floods occur in non metropolis areas, villagers wonder why it happens.

We had a break at the 1st sulfur depot near the starting point of Paltuding. The management decided to move the depot and process the sulfur there due to some complaints from the people around the factory. It just makes sense because the sulfur stinks when it comes out of the earth%26#39;s tummy through a volcano or when people boil it in a big frying pan in the factory.

At the Arabica hotel, I saw some tourists sitting and having some drinks after a long drive from Bromo, Bali or Kalibaru. Doing a trip in Java is quite different from that of Bali. In Bali, you can see 7 - 10 places of interest in one day, and that you do not have to go through such a long drive. In Java, you may see only one place a day, but that single place is really spectacular, and that the memory will stay for such long time. Ah, may be I am just exaggerating. Of course people have their own way of spending their holiday. Some tourists feel good staying at a hotel and goes to the same restaurant and pub everyday for 2 weeks in a row. Some people like to spend their holiday by counting how many thousands of miles they make, some like to do the ';let%26#39;s get to the point%26#39; stuff and do not mind missing the experience of the places around the site. It always challenges me to design a good itinerary for some independent travelers to see the beauty of the island without having to drive long. My trip is not suitable for those who fancy luxury. Get back to Bali if that’s what you are looking for. For accommodations in many places of interest in East Java, very often you have to take it as it comes. At Ijen National Park, there are only 3 places for tourists to stay . They are Arabica Homestay, Catimor and Jampit Guest House. Jampit is normally empty, even when the other hotels are fully booked. Apparently the location is a bit far from the main road. You do not feel like driving one more hour after a 5 hour chaotic drive. I am a safe driver myself, I only crash 2 or 3 dogs a year in Bali, chickens in Java and pigs in Flores.

In terms of ambiance, Jampit is one of my favorites in Java. Near Arabica, I suggested Steph and Marie see one of the real villages at Ijen National Park. Yes, to the best of my knowledge, the tour to this charming village where most of the inhabitants work for the coffee plantation is not scheduled by any other tour operators. The coffee business is not fair trade, and the inhabitants who live in simplicity are busy only at harvest time, which starts from July to November. What about the rest of the year? They have to survive by cultivating some vegetables like onions, strawberries, potatoes and cabbages. They also breed goats to get an extra income. Having finished the trip of the day, I was welcomed by Pak Awi and he showed us to our rooms.

Steph and Marie occupied the best room at Catimor. They did not seem to have the time to indulge themselves at the Jacuzzi. After dinner, I showed them one of the documentaries on Ijen and was ready to answer questions. Ibu Mur of the hotel asked me if my customers wanted a cup of Kopi Luwak. I am not a coffee drinker myself but I know the most expensive coffee at the classiest place I have ever been in Bali would cost me less than US $ 7.00. Here in Ijen, a cup costs you 100,000 (US $10.00), wanna try?

    Day 2, Monday, 23rd February 2009

We got up around 05.00 and started the trek in a cool morning. The hike is one of the easiest in Indonesia. I would say you do not really need a guide to get to the summit as these incredible workers carry the sulfur that weighs between 40 - 120 kg from the deep inside the volcano back to the base at Paltuding twice a day. They balance a piece of wood across their shoulders with a basket on both ends. They have to strategically wriggle under the balancing bar and then stand up. We were shown one man’s shoulders under his shirt to see the permanent scarring from the load. When it comes to going down the crater, Ijen is really not a toy volcano at all. That%26#39;s when I am needed by my customers. There used to be a sign that says:'; Il est absolument interdit de descendre dans le crater à tous sauf les travailleurs'; (it%26#39;s prohibited to go down the crater except for the workers). A French woman fell off the cliff and died in 1997. 5 months ago 2 French women passed out and I heard that their guide from a reputable tour operator had let them go down alone. Why French ? Yeah, Ijen has been mostly visited by the Francophones since 1997 after Nicolas Hulot produced a TV documentary on Ijen.. Before then, I met a lot of Dutch. In my opinion, the Dutch visited the National Park for the coffee plantation, and soon found out that there was something else to see.

I think it is fair enough for the rangers to put this prohibition sign because when the toxic smoke comes to you, there is only little oxygen and you had better know how to anticipate this tricky situation. No wonder an American writer, named Bill Dalton, who I believe has been to more than 100 islands in Indonesia put a title ';what planet is this?'; on his Ijen section. The word %26#39;Ijen%26#39; in Javanese means “alone”. Ijen is a lone volcano, may be people thought nobody would go there because it stinks. It is interesting that a French man in his documentary on Ijen calls it %26#39;cratère vert%26#39; which means green crater. In Javanese “ Ijo” means green and the noble word for Ijo is Ijem (with an m at the end), and the color of the sulfur lake is green.

The trip down the crater is, in fact, the hardest part of the trip. On our way between the shelter and the top of Ijen, we came across a couple of Dutch who had almost been down the crater and finally quit on the way down as the toxic fume ';attacked'; them. In the end, they followed us and did the crater trip under my supervision. Just a quarter way down to the crater, one of the porters acting as my assistant (for a maximum security I always go down the crater with at least an assistant) shouted at me and asked me to reconsider taking Steph. She cried and said that she was afraid. I came to her and asked how she was feeling and after a while made sure she would manage the situation. I personally took extra care of her until we all got back to the top. In my career as a guide, 95% of my customers get down to Ijen crater without big problems and I have been careful in making decision on who will go down with me. Safety is my top priority. Once I used a bandage from my first aid tool, but that was for a tourist from another tour operator. The guide said he had forgotten (#?§!) to bring along the first aid stuff .

We-Steph, Marie, the Dutch couple and I- managed to get the bottom of the solfatara and stayed there for a while. We got thicker smoke to contend with. Probably their chests were aching at that stage..

After that-quite an experience-trip, we headed down and had a little break at the shelter Pondok Bunder. I guess they were all happy to be alive! During lunch, I had to tell Steph and Marie that the trip to Semeru was not going to happen as I stated before on the itinerary. Steph later asked if I cancelled the trip because of her and I said it was not the case.

We drove to Mount Bromo and checked in at the hotel. At dinner, we discussed all the options to replace the Semeru trip. We were supposed to do Semeru trek on day 3 but were eventually prohibited to climb that majestic volcano due to the significant change of the eruption interval. Semeru normally erupts 50 - 130 times a day and it%26#39;s still considered normal when the interval of the eruption goes down to 40 times a day. It happens almost every year. This time it erupts every 10 hours and it has been like that for 4 weeks. According to one of the vulcanologists that we met at Gunung Sawur observation center, the seismic data said that the activity was still normal but it could become dangerous when the frequency of the eruption does not occur as usual. Some villagers say it is normally caused by the thick magma that blocks the Jonggring Saloka crater. What worries them is that when it explodes, it%26#39;s going to be big and probably violent.

    Day 3, Tuesday, 24 February 2009

3.45 a.m. .Wake up door knock. We took a 4.2 liter engine jeep to the Bromo look out point called Mount Penanjakan. Very bumpy ride, the view point was not packed with tourists this time, so I told the jeep driver to take us to the touristy point, not to my usual secret place for my customers to take pictures without any other tourists blocking the view.

The sunrise was an okay one. There were two perspectives, one being the sun rising over the horizon and the opposite directing to this breath-taking view of Mount Bromo, surrounded by many towering mountains, and one of them supposedly erupts every 15 - 25 minutes. On a clearer day, the sun light is supposed to be pouring over the slopes of other mountains, making it a colorful scenery. I see Bromo several times a month, so I enjoy more the sounds of everyone getting excited. The sweet melodies of Javanese singing in their language and the eeewwwww%26#39;s and ahhhh%26#39;s building up as the sun rise got closer.

Back in the Jeep for another rocky ride to Bromo not too far away. When we got there I had to deal with all those horse masters who wanted the tourists to choose their horses for riding. I finally chose the big ones for them. Steph came back to me and said that her horse kicked the other ones and I chose another one for her. It happens when these horses are physically too close to one another.

Looking at the volcano, I recalled the time when the last eruption occurred. I left the volcano on 8 June 2004 at 07.30 , and at 15.26 that day it erupted, killing a couple of tourists, one from Surabaya and the other from Singapore. I came back a few days later and saw many big rocks, some of them weighed more than 150 kg scattered on the sea sand more than a kilometer away from the volcano. The locals told me a strange story that the tourists who got killed were wearing flip-flops. They said that had they worn proper shoes, they could have managed to escape like the others.

This tour to Bromo was quite an easy one for Stéphanie and Marie. We went back to the hotel to have breakfast, and after that we were off to one of my favorite places in Java, the hidden paradise Mada waterfall. I like this place partly because there are very few tourists who go there. Most of them come from the cities nearby.

I provided a plastic crate with all Stéphanie and Marie%26#39;s stuff in it and we started a walk through a nice landscape on a small zigzaging path - a river coming from the waterfall.

Along this path we went under some falling water which was just freezing cold. The screams of excitement began, the end of the track was a massive cascading waterfall with a pool of water at the bottom. I led Steph and Marie across to the side. We entered the water slowly and then walked through the water and stayed directly under the waterfall!

The local people say that the waterfall is known for its healing qualities. It rained the previous day so the water was pounding heavily on top of our heads. Then we plunged into the pool of water to swim about. Water relaxes me. I was filled with utter joy, pleasure and amazement. I could happily have stayed there forever.

We decided to go to the Semeru observation center at Gunung Sawur. We did not see any lava from that view point and decided to move to Supit Urang, the closest spot, to see the lava on Semeru. The chance of us seeing the lava was pretty small as it had been cloudy all afternoon.. I decided not to set up tent at Ayou area. We stayed at the house of the chief of Supit Urang village. His wife told me that less than 2 weeks before they had a volcanic earth quake, a small one though.

When everybody was asleep, I went out to see mount Semeru from the distance. I saw part of the slopes of this majestic volcano among the clouds and I suddenly felt scared thinking about the devastation that a volcano could create. Is it going to explode violently some day ? Even scientists can never guarantee that an active volcano will not erupt violently. My beautiful country is located on the Pacific ring of fire, lots of volcanoes. Islands in Indonesia lie above two tectonic plates, one of which is being pulled underneath the other at a rate of 6cm per year.

The volcano in front of my nose is considered to be one of the most active in the world. Maybe the people who live here do not have to fight against the eruption every day like the Icelanders, but at least they are aware that one day they will have to deal with the consequences. Numerous deaths have occurred. On 14 May 1981 heavy rains created mudflows and killed 252 people, 152 were injured and 120 missing. On 3 February 1994 six people were killed and 275 people were evacuated. In 1999, two German climbers died near the crater on 2nd September after being struck by large ejected ballistics. A scientific team was caught in an eruption at the summit of Semeru on 27 July 2000. An explosion resulted in two deaths and injuries to five other volcanologists near the crater. Some students got lost attempting to climb Mahameru without a guide. In 2004, when I was at Bromo, a ranger from Semeru called me and told me that a man from a group of 11 French people died of heart attack and that they were climbing without a guide. I called my associate Joe to ask if he knew the group. Joe said that he was the guide for Merapi trek in Yogya. He asked if the dead man had white hair and the ranger at Semeru confirmed that that was the one. The director of the travel agency once asked me for a quotation to guide this group.

Not far from here-still in East Java-, lies mount Raung that that killed around 1,000 people. Mount Kelud 10,000 people and here in East Java we have other volcanos such as Welirang, Arjuna, Argo Puro, etc. Back home in Bali, Mount Agung erupted in 1963, killing 1,147 people.

In Central Java, Mount Merapi killed 1,000 people, Papandayan more than 2,900 casualties, Galunggung 4,000 people. The last major eruption on Galunggung was in 1982, which killed 68 people. This eruption also brought the dangers of volcanic ash to aero planes and managed to attract worldwide attention, after two Boeing 747 passenger jets flying downwind of the eruption suffered temporary engine failures and damage to exterior surfaces, both planes being forced to make emergency landings at Jakarta airport.

A British Airways aircraft carrying 240 passengers, accidentally entered the ash cloud during night time in June 1982, about 150 km downwind of the volcano. All four engines failed and the aircraft descended for 16 minutes, losing 7500 meters of its 11500 meter altitude, until the crew managed to restart the engines.

The following month a Singapore Airlines aircraft with 230 passengers aboard also inadvertently entered the cloud at night time, and three of its four engines stopped. The crew succeeded in restarting one of the engines after descending 2400 meters. Both aircraft suffered serious damage to their engines and exterior surfaces.

A scientist says that Indonesia leads the world in many volcano statistics. It has the largest number of historically active volcanoes (76), its total of 1,171 dated eruptions is only narrowly exceeded by Japan%26#39;s 1,274, and these two regions have combined to produce 1/3 of the known explosive eruptions. Indonesia has suffered the highest numbers of eruptions producing fatalities, damage to arable land, mudflows, tsunamis, domes, and pyroclastic flows. ... Four-fifths of Indonesian volcanoes with dated eruptions erupted in 20th century ..

And my country has experienced at least 3 global disasters, two of them were caused by volcanos, and the last one was the tsunami that hit Indonesia in 2004.

    First in 1815,

The summary of volcanos in Indonesia that I was reading says that Tambora eruption was the greatest volcanic disaster in all of recorded history. Located on the island of Sumbawa,Indonesia, gave about 3 years of warning prior to it%26#39;s eruption in the form of small phreatic eruptions and steaming. The eruption killed 12,000 people due to pyroclastic flows, but that was not the main killer. The eruption caused a world-wide famine that resulted in the death of an additional 80,000 people. This brought the Tambora death toll to a staggering 92,000 lives.

The eruption also ejected a big amount of material to 50 cubic km. . The aerosols that was released into the air by Tambora caused a global climate change that rocked the world. It dropped global temperatures as much as 3 degrees Celsius and is responsible for ';the year without a summer';. An article says that Napoleon Bonaparte failed uniting his soldiers due the significant change of climate, and he lost the war there. Global cooling often has been linked with major volcanic eruptions. The year 1816 was a time of significant weather-related disruptions in New England and in Western Europe with killing summer frosts in the United States and Canada. These strange phenomena were attributed to a major eruption of the Tambora volcano in 1815 in Indonesia. The volcano threw sulfur dioxide gas into the stratosphere, and the aerosol layer that formed led to brilliant sunsets seen around the world for several years.

    The second one, Krakatau.

Like Tambora, Krakatau exhibited several years of seismic tic activity before its eruption in 1883. The final eruption blew away the top three quarters of the island and the explosion was heard 4,500 km away, making it the loudest noise in history. The eruption killed 5,000 people in pyroclastic flows and killed an additional 31,417 people in tsunamis.

This earth-shattering event became the greatest natural disaster of the 19th century: the sky was bathed in an unearthly red glow and the fallout was felt around the world.

The force of the eruption created the loudest noise ever recorded: it was heard 4,653km away on Rodriguez Island in the Indian Ocean and some 4,800km away in Alice Springs; shock waves traveled around the world seven times; and the force of the blast was some 10,000 times greater than that of the hydrogen bomb dropped on Hiroshima. The volcano left 36,000 people dead and the survivors battled to cope with tsunamis,

    As the volcano erupted, a plume of ash swept 80km into the sky, the hot gas became unstable and raced across nearby islands at 150km. ';Those who weren%26#39;t killed by the intense heat,'; says Dr Dave Rothery, from the Department of Earth Sciences at the Open University, ';would have been sandblasted to death. It was hot enough to carbonize everything in its path.';

The real killers, though, were the giant tsunamis that were unleashed, reaching heights of 40m and which were so violent that they flung sections of coral reef ashore, some weighing as much as 600 tons. Like the Indonesian tsunami on Boxing Day 2004, these tsunamis destroyed everything in their path.

The BBC re-examined the impact of one of the world%26#39;s largest volcanoes in a factual drama, Karate - The Last Days, and in an accompanying documentary, Karate Revealed. Human tragedy aside, Krakatoa was important because it was declared a ';modern'; disaster and became one of the first global media events.

It produced a wealth of first-hand survivor accounts: a German quarry manager recounted being hurled by a wall of water from the top of his office block and swept into the jungle below. To his astonishment, he saw a crocodile being carried alongside him and incredibly he leapt on the animal%26#39;s back and rode it for 3km before being deposited, unharmed, on the rainforest floor

    The rest of the world heard such stories almost instantly because a series of underwater telegraph cables had been recently laid traversing the globe. For the first time, operators were able to communicate stories to their counterparts across the globe using morse code. As Professor Nick Petford, from the School of Earth Sciences and Geology at Kingston University, London, and presenter of the BBC documentary explains, ';This is the first time a volcano had exploded and was known about instantly. The underwater telegraph cables were a network for communication, the precursor to the internet.';

    This new technology meant that Krakatoa also generated the first modern scientific study of a volcanic eruption. ';At the time geology was a lively academic discipline,'; says Petford. ';A Dutch scientist, Rogier Verbeek, got there very quickly and recorded everything and his report was an astoundingly inspired piece of work.';

And now Anak Rakata (the son of Karakatau) is growing up. The summit of Anak Rakata has now reached 230 meters above sea level, and it keeps on growing up to 4 cm per year.

That late evening, before I went to sleep, I was puzzled with a very simple question: ';which explosion was bigger? Tambora or Krakatau? The Guinness book of record says that Krakatau eruption was the most powerful bang ever recorded in history, and the experts say that the VEI of Krakatau was one level LOWER than Tambora. Tired, I put back my book. Just before sleeping, I could still remember reading the last sentence in my summary on the VEI 8 of the super volcanos : Yellow Stone (overdue), Lake Toba, etc... I hoped I was not going to have a bad dream that night... Cause the following day I would take Steph and Marie to my off-the-beaten-track places. They are the undiscovered Angels Tear-drops and Konmer beach and the after we would do some island hopping including Poepoe island.

Thanks for reading. I do hope this will not discourage you from climbing Indonesian volcanos.

    Hi MasPaul,

I loved reading this post even if it was a long one. Loved the way you wrote about the trip and weaved history into the article as well.

Well Done. Have just sent you a Private Message.

    Pamela

    Java, volcanoes

Yes, I got your message, thank you. I also sent you the pics of Bromo, Ijen, Mada and the Angels Tears. Sorry, I had a problem compressing the file.

Dear Paul, nice story. I hope one days we can meet on Road. I%26#39;m also very interesting with Volcanoes.

    regards

    odesya @ exploredesa.com

    Hi Aris,

May be we have met before. Did you go to Semeru between 27 - 29 September 2009? You live in West Java right ? Which volcanoes in Indo do you often hike on?

    I meant 2008.

Now, I can remmember you. we meet in RanuPane Lake for Lunch. I hope we can Meet again, I will be in Bali this Month.

    enjoy your jobs..

    ARIS

Ha ha, you were wrong. We met at Ranu Kumbolo at lunch time. You were preparing watermelon for your customers. My customers and I were on our way back to Ranu Pani and you were on your way up to Kalimati.

We were lucky to have a clear morning that day, 3 eruptions for 30 minutes. There was this bloody BADAI just after Cemoro Tunggal, though. It was a critical moment for me to decide what to do. After discussing for a while, I decided to SPEED UP and in the end we found a simple spot to prevent from this hard blown wind. You can imagine that I had both my legs cramp. It%26#39;s good that my porters did not forget to bring his wood so that we could make some fire to warm up our bodies. My thermometer said it was 4°.

Anyway, gimme a call when you are in Bali. I will be in Java doing a long trip by motorcycle with my customers.

    Hi Mischka,

I got your message. Which place you want to see. Bromo ? Ijen? Semeru? Angle Tears? Konmer? Poepoe?

Where do you want to start from ? Bali or Surabaya ?

    Mas Paul,

How wowuld I love to be touring with you on motor cycle that would be just so fantastic.

You will definitely have to do a write up on that adventure for sure.

    Pamela

    Dear Pam,

Yes, it would be fun... My customers and I clean forgot about NYEPI (day of silence) that will fall on 26 this month. That is supposed to be the day we start the tour ! It%26#39;s my mistake for sure cause I am the organiser. We%26#39;ll work out something. When shall I have the pleasure of taking you around on a motorbike ? No, it%26#39;s not a big motorbike, only 250 cc, but good enuv for all over Java...
