Ogah Ogah parade before Nyepi Day - Best spot near Seminyak

We fly into Bali on the 25th March 09 at Midday - the day before Nyepi Day (Silence Day 26 March 09).

We%26#39;re in a Serene Villa in Seminyak and have everything planned for the actual Nyepi Day considering you can%26#39;t leave the hotel / villa from 5am till 5am on 27th!

I want to get the most out of the evening before, Can someone recommend the best place to watch festivities of the parading Ogah Ogah (monster effigies) %26amp; give me an idea of food venues for that night? Any festival specials ?

What times do the parades happen ?

Do they burn the effigies that night ?

It is our first trip to Bali - but we really love spicy local food when we go to other SE Asian countries and are hoping to savour local specialities in Bali. Please help !

Ogah Ogah parade before Nyepi Day - Best spot near Seminyak

There has been a post re; Nyepi dayduring the last few weeks, perjhaps if you do a search you might come across it.

Last i heard was that it had been cancelled across Bali due to the upcoming elections. Whether the local people will adhere to the advice given by their governor i don%26#39;t know.

I%26#39;ve seen photos of the Ogoh Ogoh parades %26amp; it looks like alot of fun so hope you%26#39;re lucky!

I have spoken to a local whose temple is in Seminyak and I believe the Ogoh-Ogoh have been cancelled this year due to the proximity of the Presidential Elections (don%26#39;t ask me what one has to do with the other!) There will still be parades but no effigies which is a pity as they are always great fun and the Balinese always have a ball, especially the kids. There wil be a torch festival instead.

From my understanding talking to locals the Ogah Ogah has been cancelled this year due to the elections, or at least severly cut down in size. They are worried about political parties using the parades to promote their parties which could cause tensions.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I looked at another post that said the same about the elections%26#39; proximity and its influence on the parade. I suppose we%26#39;ll just have to wait and see - somehow I doubt Silence Day part has been cancelled ha ha !

I%26#39;m in Kuta now. the ogoh ogoh have not been made %26amp; parades are cancelled.

Thanks for your reply - just means I%26#39;ll have to come on another holiday to see them !

The hotel at which I am staying has advised that there will be a parade on Kuta beach at around 7pm tonight.

I heard that Kuta will have the only authorized Ogah Ogah event.

All the others are cancelled this year due to elections.
