I%26#39;ve plan to travel to Jakarta in the end of this year.

1.)And I heard story about fantastic shopping in Mangga Dua. So I%26#39;ve plan to stay around Mangga Dua.Can you advise me a good hotel in Mangga Dua?

2) And what about shopping at Tanah Abang? With one is better between Tanah Abang and Mangga Dua?

3) How long the journey from Mangga Dua to Tanah Abang?

4)Can you tell me any place that we can shopping a lot?

Shopping Area in jakarta?

Well if you want to buy fabrics and garments...Tanah abang is the right place and I heard Tanah Abang is the biggest garment market in South East Asia or even more because if you go to Tanah Abang you can see packages tobe shipped even to African countries.

But if you want to buy cloths and souvenirs (mostly from china)or computer and electronic stuff, Mangga Dua is the best ever deal you will get..cheap and cheap and thousand of choices.

Takes arround 30 minutes from Mangga Dua to Tanah Abang.

Hotel in Mangga Dua Area : Novotel, Sheraton and Dusit (Le Grendeur)

Hotel in Tanah Abang : I know Only Milenium hotel but you can stay in hotels along Thamrin Area with 3,4,5 star hotel chains. Takes only 5 minutes by Cab from Thamrin Area to Tanah Abang

So happy shopping and I%26#39;m sure you will get a lots because both areas are known as cheap and reasonable price for shoppers

Shopping Area in jakarta?

To give better opinion. Both Mangga Dua and Tanah ABang are mainly huge shoopping compound consistng of malls inter-connected together with bridges.

It will be very much depending on what you are planning to shop. Mangga Dua also have plenty of clothing options however IMHO, Tanah Abang is offering slightly lower quality and of course lower price than Mangga Dua. Mangga Dua clothing option is more toward fashion and other items such as electronic, computer stuffs and toys

Tanah Abang quite famous for moslem clothing.

Hotel-wise if you plan to stay in Mangga Dua, Le Grandeur and Ibis is the best option since it is located right in the middle of Mangga Dua while Novotel and Sheraton is quite further away

For Tanah Abang, Millenium is the best option, some smaller option like Caravan Hotel is not recommended.

From Mangga Dua to Tanah Abang will take around 30-40 mins on the weekdays mainly to beat the traffic jams.

Hi, I have to disagree with verdims about the quality of goods sold in Tanah Abang. It mostly sell fabrics and clothing which are local production. But the quality I would say no different if you can pick a good stuff. For most of the clothing, you need to buy it in bulk - we called it %26#39;GROSIR%26#39; (or at least 3 pieces, all in the same model or buy it in series (size S,M,L)) although some others do sell it in piece. For other stuff like fabrics (you can buy it per meter), luggage, ladies handbag, and boutique-like shops at level 5 or 6, you can buy it by piece. Moslem fashion are in one level. Some of the retailer at Tanah Abang also supply their goods to Mangga Dua.

While Mangga Dua is selling mostly imported fashion item from China or Korea (I would say %26#39;ah lian%26#39; type of clothing). There is also watches, electronics, computer stuff at Mall Mangga Dua, attached to Le Grandeur Hotel, just in front of Ibis Mangga Dua.

For both places, you need to show your skill in bargaining, except if the seller already give %26#39;special offer%26#39; tag, you will unlikely to get it cheaper.

One more thing, these 2 places start the business as early as 8am-3pm (Tanah Abang) and around 9am-4pm (Mangga Dua). When the night calls, you can do more shopping at many jakarta%26#39;s huge shopping malls. Recommended one are Senayan City or Grand Indonesia (for KLCC-type of shopping) Plaza Indonesia (for Starhill-type), and Sarinah Department Store for Indonesian souvenir.

thanx a lot for those who reply my msg. Really hope i can bring back a super duper gif/souviner for myself n my relatives.

i would like to buy kebaya sulam or any sulaman fabric to make baju kurung or baju kebaya. i also heard about ';sulaman ayak';. i will buy those thing in grosir bcoz i like to sell it here :)

how much the reasonable price for that sulam2 product?

Oh i see, for the baju kebaya, batiks, and other fabrics, Tanah Abang will provide everything for you.

Anyway, I%26#39;m not sure about the price though, however you can haggle a bit if you decide to buy in bulk.

Zyyz,

For the kebaya sulam etc, ask for bordir, and for the lace stuff fabric to make wedding dresses you can find it there too, there are tens of shops on the basement floors at Tanah Abang and if you want to buy in bulk buy borong (grosir) on the upper floors. Price wise depends on what you want, A good fabric with nice sulam may cost you IDR100-130k (in KL it may be sold at RM90-100) for fabric alone.Very good ones can cost you more at IDR300-400k. Hotel you can try the 2 Ibis up the road frm TA.. one is Arcadia about RM120-140 per nite. 3 minutes by bajaj to TA (about IDR 7k) try it la.. good experience. From Arcadia turn left go to jalan Jaksa you will find Kopitiam selling Malaysian style food, turn right from the Arcadia you can see Garuda Padang food, Sarinah and a few other malls are within walking distance too. Enjoy

May i know, where is Pasar Baru? what the intresting item there?

Pasar Baru is also in central jakarta. The place is famous for shoes, fabrics, and department store which always offer sale all day long (with those ear-banging trance music). The textile shops are mostly owned by Indians. It is a covered walkway style of shophouses as in Jalan Petaling, KL but not as crowded as there. You can find variety of shoes (mostly local made), and for fabric, you can also get good variety, but almost the same as in Tanah Abang (except you%26#39;re looking for sari or Indian dress). Thee also have tailors that can make suit within a few hours.

Pasar Baru is in between Mangga Dua and Tanah Abang.

Hi! hope you havn%26#39;t fly to jakarta yet.

Been there last year. Stayed @ Le Grandeur @ mangga Dua. Superb hotel %26amp; location!!! walking distance to the mall (like Mid Valley n Cititel hotel). Crazy shopping over there. No regret at all.

I took a cab to Tanah Abang. Can%26#39;t recall how much but not expansive though as long as hassle free %26amp; comfy trip.

Should and it is a must to visit Tanah abang. Heaven for shoppers. Worries not just bring your compass incase u lost ur way. Damn a lot of shop outlets, alleys %26amp; floor inside there!

happy shopping :-)
