Must you reserve drivers in advance?

It looks like we will be in Bali in October, staying almost 2 weeks total, in Amed, Ubud and Sanur. While I%26#39;m a planner by nature, I realy like to decide what we%26#39;ll do for the day once there. Will it be fine to allow our hotels to arrange drivers we need for 1/2 or perhaps full day trips (do they do that?). Or is it better to reserve a recommended driver before getting to the island?

Thank you for your thoughts.

if you get your hotel to arrange a driver / tour you will be paying a lot more. you can walk out of your hotel and get a driver from the street. in bali you will constantly be offered %26#39;transport%26#39;. some of these guys are very good and you will have to bargain for a good price. since it is your first trip it would be a good idea to book a recommended driver for at least one or two days. that way you can e mail each other and get some great ideas on things to see and do and it will help get the most out of a day tour. some of the drivers off the street will be good at helping you and others will just take you where you say you want to go so some planning with a recommended driver does has it%26#39;s advantages. i use recommended drivers and drivers off the street depending where / what i am doing. Dean and his team of drivers are excellent and so to is Eddy Kus. other people will provide a %26#39;favourite%26#39; driver as well. even if you book a recommended driver you can always decide on the day what you will like to see and they are good at filling in the day with extra stops, good restaurants etc.

I agree with Snooky, just walk out the front of your hotel and book a driver. This is what I always do and have never had a problem. If I know I am heading off somwhere, I will organise a driver the day before. It%26#39;s always a good idea to check out their car, see if it%26#39;s roadworthy and air conditioned, and you can also bargain for a good price which both of you are happy with.
